World's Tiniest Chameleons Found in Madagascar

Smallest Lizard A juvenile Brookesia micra is barely bigger than a match head.

This little chameleon is one of four miniature lizards identified in Madagascar, adding to our growing list of amazingly teeny animals. The one on the match in this picture is a juvenile, but even the adults max out at 30 millimeters. They're the smallest lizards in the world, and some of the smallest vertebrates found to date.

The Lilliputian lizard is near the lower limits of size in vertebrate animals. Learning about how these creatures live can put some constraints on animal morphology — if your species has eyes, a backbone and a brain, there’s likely a limit to how little you can get. A different group of field biologists just announced the world’s smallest frog, and they claim it is the smallest vertebrate in the world, knocking a tiny Indonesian fish off the pedestal of puniness.

The chameleons are related to other Madagascan lizards, but DNA analysis showed they have enough genetic differences to count as distinct species, according to the researchers who found them, led by Frank Glaw of the Zoological State Collection of Munich. The animals live in leafy undergrowth in Madagascan forests.

Tiny and camouflaged — how did they find these guys? Most of the lizards were collected at night, when they typically climb up into the underbrush to roost. The field biologists used torches and headlamps to spot the sleeping lizards, according to their paper.

  1. This is very interesting and neat. It is crazy how small they are. I had never thought about there being a limit on how small a size a vertebrate animal could be. I understand why though.

  2. Wow, those things would probably be super easy to lose. I mean, it is really neat how small they are, but I would be almost scared I would accidently step on it or my dog would get it. That would be my biggest concern. How did they see these things to find them though?? Crazy to think how many species are out there that we have yet to find or don't even know about. This is so neat!!

  3. I had no idea that chameleons could be so small. I just don't know why they need to camouflage themselves if they're so small. These chameleons remind me of the movie "Ant-Man"

  4. This is very neat that the chameleons could be this tiny. I bet it would be hard to have them as a pet like a normal sized chameleon because they would be easy to lose.I wonder how long it actually took for them to find them.

  5. It is bizzare to see this reptilian on almost the same size scale as the insects they consume. Though it may be off topic, I'm now curious to find out if there is an abnormally large chameleon out there, seeing this it may seem quite likely

  6. This is so cool. It is very neat how small these things are, I would've never thought a chameleon could be this small. I wonder how people even found them in the first place. I would love to have one of these.

  8. I would want one of these as a pet. I dont even know how anyone could have possibly found this even if they were sleeping, because they are just so small! This is super cool though.

  9. It's so cool to see how small these little things are. I feel like if you were to lose one there wouldn't be any finding it because of how tiny it is. I've seen small chameleons before but never any this tiny!

  10. lol thats so cool, I didnt know that their were such tiny animals like these lizards, i didnt even know something that small could survive. My one question is how is it a different species because of its size?

  11. This is neat to see a Chameleon that small but I wonder how it survives being so small. Also how different they live from the bigger species. It would be interesting to find out.

  12. OMG I WANT A LITTLE CHAMELEON!! I want to know how much they eat being so tiny. It would be cool to be that little because you could fit in a lot of places. But dangerous because being so small you can be really defenseless.

  13. These are so cool and cute. I have never seen anything this little. It looks like it would be hard to find these though so how did they discover them in the first place ?

  14. This is a very cool animal. I've never seen an animal so small before. I think it is kinda cute in an ugly way; if that makes any sense. I wonder how they found such a small lizard. I would like to know what they eat to stay so small.

  15. I think this is very cool. I'm still very surprised that the researchers could find them because of their size and the fact that they're a type of chameleon, which gives them the power to blend in to their surroundings.

  16. Its very shocking to see something so little. I think its weird to think about house tiny the organs must be. Also I wonder about what Jodi said like how much would they eat.

  17. I think that this artice is very crazy. What does he eat and what're the limits to his eating? I think that this saves them from much prededation and dying.

  18. I think that this is insane that very cool. Who would have thought that the was such a small lizard out there. I surely didn't. Just think. If there is that small of a lizard then what else is out there. I can wait to see if there is any more interesting new animals out there.

  19. These things are kinda cute. Who knows how many more species we can find in Madagascar. Maybe we will even find a smaller chameleon! Its always interesting to discover record breaking species. It seems that we've already found the biggest, but I'm curious to what the smallest may be. And yeah im curious as to what the lizards diet consists of and what preys on them.

  20. The size of these things, plus the ability to blend in is crazy camo.. I would never find these things even if they were sitting right in front of me. It would be weird for these things to be wondering around my house because you would never know where they are. These things are cool.
