MODERATION IS KEY
Eating a diet heavy in processed meats like hot dogs and salami can increase people’s risk of developing colorectal cancer, according to a statement from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization.
After considering the results of more than 800 studies, the committee classified processed meats as a Group 1 carcinogen, which is known to cause cancer in humans—other agents in that group include alcohol, smoking, and various chemical compounds. Red meat, such as beef or pork, was categorized as a Group 2A possible carcinogen.
But having a diet filled with bacon and sausage doesn’t mean that a person is likely to develop cancer as much as a smoker is likely to. Three out of every 10,000 cases of colorectal cancer is caused by processed meats, a nutritional and gastrointestinal health expert told The Guardian—that’s about 40 cases in the U.S. per year. Smoking, on the other hand, is responsible for 30 percent of all cancer deaths (and many more cases), which is almost 177,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone.
So although the evidence supporting the link between red and processed meats and an elevated cancer risk is strong, eating those foods isn’t the biggest cancer risk—smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption are still responsible for millions more deaths worldwide.
"For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed," said Kurt Straif, the head of the IARC program, in a press release.
As Cancer Research UK points out, a little meat isn’t bad for you, as long as it’s in moderation.
I think this article is very interesting. I've always knew too much processed or undercooked meat cold cause problems in your body but I didn't know that they cause cancer. so many things now a days have been labeled as a carcinogens. Just because people have found this out I don't think many people will change their diet
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting and surprising. I knew processed meat was bad for your health. However, I did not know it could cause cancer. Thankfully it is not the main cause of people being diagnosed with cancer. It would be hard for people not to eat processed meats.
ReplyDeletethis is really interesting. many things cause cancer and it is not suprising processed meat was one of them. I don't think I will have a problem staying away from that kind of food from now on because I don't want to get cancer.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that processed meats could cause cancer. Even though it causes cancer, you still shouldn't eat a ton of processed meats because it will make you obese. I need to watch how many processed meats I eat. I'm glad I learned this.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know all meat could cause cancer. I thought only fried foods could cause cancer. I do feel relieved however knowing that you won't get cancer if you eat in moderation. I hope they find a cure to cancer soon.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting and surprising to me that meats could cause cancer. I knew that having too many processed meats could cause problems but not to that extent. Learning this makes me want to change my eating habits and watch out on what meat I choose to eat now.
ReplyDeleteI mean i figured that certain processed meats were not healthy for you because of all the foods in it, and that heart diesease is from unhealthy diet which includes these types of meats. So I try to stay away from meats and eat healthier stuff such as fruits so i dont die young.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is very interesting because meat is a big thing in Americans daily life. Even though this is serious I highly doubt we will stop eating meats. We eat meat 1, 2, or even times a day for breakfast, linch, and dinner. Even though this is really happening I don't think it'll make a big difference on our diets.
ReplyDeleteMany people eat meat all the time. I think that people should cut back a little bit, but not a lot. We need to be eating more healthier to help prevent cancer.
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting because most people know that eating alot of undercooked meat can be unhealthy. They probably didnt know its a cancer risk but they will still probably eat it. Theres so many things now that can cause cancer, this is just a small amount of it.
ReplyDeleteI eat meat with almost every meal. I always knew that eating too much meat is bad for you, but I didn't know it could cause cancer. This won't change my diet though because although it can cause cancer, it is a very low possibility. I can't think of a day that I didn't have a meal without meat in it.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't surprise me, considering how bad that process meat is for you because I've heard so much bash on processed meat, it was only a matter of time they'd figure out something wrong with it and besides there's tons of things in this world. The difference is the probability of cancer for each, thank goodness processed meat is leaving a very low risk.
ReplyDeleteI find that I already knew this. But at least the information about this might make people quit eating things like this and become healthier. The bad part is that it causes cancer and nobody wants cancer.
ReplyDeleteI find that this is something I already knew. Meat is something that is need for your body but, if you eat to many you can get sick but, i never thought about cancer being a factor from meat which can change people eating style, make them healthier
ReplyDeleteMe and my family eat a lot of meat. I knew it wasn't the best thing for you but i never knew you could get cancer from it. This is very serious but im sure the world is not going to stop eating meat.
ReplyDeletePeople shouldn't really be worried about this, considering that its not a very high risk. I eat a lot of meat, and I know a lot of people I know do too, and I've never heard of this happening.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard anything about any meat linking to any kind of cancer. After Mr. Dunn saying something about how meat has a protein that is bad for you in it then it makes me think for a minute that maybe this is true and could be a possibility. I also thought the more meat you eat the healthier you are, but apparently I was wrong. This is a very interesting thing to read about. Maybe will make me think twice about what I put into my body.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't really surprising, but it is still interesting. We find out almost everyday that something new that we consume can cause cancer. Many things can cause cancer, yes we should be aware of such things, but we shouldn't stop living our lives or eating the things we do. This is still something to consider, however, because eating red meat is unhealthy and we should try to eat healthier. Getting heart disease is a more likely result of eating too much processed meats than getting cancer.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is good to know. I thought i was gonna have to stop eating my breakfast sausage, turkey that is. It is important to have a balanced diet in my opinion, so you can get all the nutrition you need from the different food groups because apparently, it can cause cancer if you eat too much meat! Very informational...
ReplyDeleteI've heard that bacon can give you cancer before but I didn't fully believe it. I love bacon and I always thought that eating meat was good for you but I guess that's only true if it's in moderation. this article was interesting to me because me and my family love bacon and I would hate to get cancer from something sooooo good!
ReplyDeleteAs the title says, moderation is key. If you eat a lot of red meat you have a chance of getting cancer. If you smoke or drink, you can get cancer. So many things that people enjoy doing, can cause cancer. Doing absolutely nothing can cause cancer. Maybe everyone needs to go vegetarian? Stop drinking? This doesn't surprise me.
ReplyDeleteI think that this article is very important to the people that may be obsessed with eating processed meats like bologna, hot dogs, salam, etc. If someone is dumb enough to eat them constantly til they get cancer, then they should at least find a healthy and happy alternative. I think that although 40 deaths is not a lot for the united states, it still is a reason that people are dying. I think that the company should not be able to sell foods that cause deaths.
ReplyDeleteI always thought that things such as bacon and other processed meats were beyond terrible for you. It's nice to know that I can enjoy some IHOP every once in a while without worrying too much about cancer. I hope more research is done and cancer can be a problem of the past. Hopefully anyone who eats alot of processed meats takes precaution.
ReplyDeleteI have always knew that processed meat such as hotdogs, bologna, bacon, etc. were bad for you. Many things can cause cancer, but I never would have thought that any type of meat that we eat would be able to do that. If you eat a lot of processed meats, you should start thinking more about eating other meats.
